(Large softshell turtle and alligator: the upper character has the fanqie 魚袁; the Sancang says it resembles a softshell turtle but is larger. The lower character has the fanqie 徒何; the Shanhaijing says that the waters of the Changjiang abound in alligators; Guo Pu’s commentary says: “It resembles a lizard; the large ones are a zhang in length, with scales and patterns; its skin can be used to make drums”; the Shijing says: “The alligator-skin drums boom, boom”; the character is formed from 黽, pronounced 猛, with the phonetic \[(口\*口)/田/一\], pronounced 那. The scripture text writes both characters with the turtle classifier 龜, which is a great error; character dictionaries do not contain these forms for 黿 and 鼉).
