阿若憍陳如（上鳥葛反次如者反梵語訛略也應云阿若多憍陳那阿若多此云解也以初解法故先彰其名憍陳那是婆羅門姓那是男聲顯從其父故新翻經云解憍陳那是也）。

> Ājñāta-Kauṇḍinya (阿若憍陳如: the upper is niǎo + gé \[ā\]; the next is rú + zhě \[ruò\]; corrupt and abbreviated Sanskrit. It should properly be Ājñāta-Kauṇḍinya (阿若多憍陳那). Ājñāta here means 'understood'; because he was the first to understand the Dharma, his name was first proclaimed. Kauṇḍinya is a brāhmaṇa clan name; nya is a masculine suffix indicating descent from his father. Thus the newly translated sūtras render it as 'Understood Kauṇḍinya' (解憍陳那)).
