> Cough and malaria (瘶瘧: the first \[character\] is \*sou\*, fanqie 乘奏. The Kaosheng says: 'A disease where breath rushes against the throat.' The Cangjie pian says: 'A disease of cold and heat.' The Wenzidian shuo says it is derived from the disease radical 疒 with 欶 as phonetic; 欶 has the same sound as above. In the sūtra text it is written with the mouth radical 口 as 嗽, which is incorrect. The second \[character\] is \*nue\*, fanqie 魚約. The Qieyun says: 'Intermittent fever disease.' Character dictionaries state that it is derived from the disease radical 疒 with 虐 as phonetic. In the sūtra text it is written singly as 虐, meaning harsh or cruel, which is not the meaning of an intermittent fever disease. Harsh (苛) is pronounced \*he\*; cruel (酷) is pronounced \*ku\*; intermittent fever (痁) is fanqie 失廉).
