> Darkness of the three realms (三界冥: the second \[character\] is \*ming\*, fanqie 莫經, also fanqie 莫定. The Erya says: 'Dim.' The Qieyun says: 'Dark; night.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'The moon begins to grow dark from the sixteenth day, hence the character is composed of 六, 日, and 冖, with 冖 pronounced \*mi\* as phonetic; it also has the shape of covering.' In the sūtra it is written with the water radical 水 as 溟, which means the appearance of a light drizzle, or an ocean, not darkness. There is also a form composed of 宀 and 具 as 𡨋, which is not the standard character; 宀 is pronounced fanqie 莫仙).
