> Sinking and submerging (沈淪: the upper character has the fanqie \*zhi\* + \*lin\* \[chén\]; the \*Qieyun\* says, "To sink." The \*Kaosheng\* says, "Turbid." The \*Shuowen\* says it is categorized under "water" with \*yán\* phonetic; \*yán\* is pronounced \*yín\*. In the text of the sūtra it is written as 沈 with the pronunciation \*hù\* + \*làng\* \[hàng\], which is not the original character. The lower character has the fanqie \*lì\* + \*zhūn\* \[lún\]; the \*Erya\* says, "Great ripples are called \*lún\*." The \*Qieyun\* says, "\*Lún\* also means to sink." The \*Kaosheng\* says, "To drown." The \*Shuowen\* says it is categorized under "water" with \*lún\* phonetic; \*lún\* has the same pronunciation as noted above).
