> Inserting an arrow (插箭: the upper character has the fanqie \*chǔ\* + \*qià\* \[chā\]; the \*Qieyun\* says, "To pierce into." It is also written as 插, both of which are incorrect; the \*Shuowen\* categorizes it under "hand" with \*chā\* (臿) as 插; \*chā\* has the same sound as above, meaning to insert a pole. The lower character has the fanqie \*jiān\* + \*xiàn\* \[jiàn\], which is a popular character; properly it is written as \[筣-禾+离\], originally the name of a bamboo resembling reeds and growing in clusters, suitable for making arrow shafts; hence arrows came to be called \*jiàn\*; it is categorized under "bamboo" with \*qián\* phonetic; \*gǎn\* has the fanqie \*gān\* + \*dàn\* \[gǎn\]).
