> 虎狼 (The upper character is 呼 + 古 \[hǔ\]; the Shuowen says: "The king among mountain beasts"; the Huainanzi says: "When the tiger roars, the valley wind arises"; it is formed from 人 (person) with 虍 as phonetic; 虍 is pronounced 呼 \[hū\]; because the tiger's paws resemble human hands, it is formed with 人; some write \[虎-儿+八\], a taboo-avoidance form which does not make a proper character; another writes 𧆞, a popular altered form that is irregular. The lower character is 魯 + 堂 \[láng\]; the Shuowen says: "Resembles a dog with white jowls and a sharp head"; the Erya says: "The female wolf is called bìng; her whelp is called an xiào"; 獥 is pronounced 胡 + 狄 \[xí\]).
