The Da Dai Li says: "The carriages of antiquity: the round canopy resembles Heaven; the square cross-bar resembles Earth; the twenty-eight spokes resemble the twenty-eight lunar mansions; the thirty spokes resemble the number of days of the sun and moon. Looking up, one observes the celestial patterns; looking down, one surveys the terrestrial layout; looking forward, one watches the sounds of the bells; looking to the sides, one observes the movement of the four seasons").
