> \[Ājñātakauṇḍinya\] Also called Kulin. The Fahua shu says: "Ājñāta is a personal name. Here translated as 'Already Known', or said to be 'Without Knowledge'. 'Without Knowledge' does not mean having no knowledge; it is knowing nothingness. It is also translated as 'Understanding'." The Śūraṅgama \[Sūtra\] says: "I first came to be called 'Understanding' and so forth; in full, it is 'Understanding the Original Limit'." Gushan says: "It is because he was the first to understand the Dharma. Kauṇḍinya is a clan name. Here translated as 'Fire Vessel', a brāhmaṇa lineage. Their ancestors worshipped fire, and took their clan name from this."
