The Jingming shu says: "The Wenshu wen jing translates it as 'Radish Root'; his parents were fond of eating it, and marked their son's name with it." Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha said: "Mugdha is here translated as horse gram, a green-colored bean. Sages of antiquity were fond of eating this and took it as their clan name." Properly it is Mahāmaudgalyāyana; the new translation renders it 'Bean-Gatherer Clan'. Shu is also a bean.
