> \[Madhyāntika\] Also named Motianji, and also named Motianti; this translates as Middle. Ānanda converted five hundred ṛṣis, and they received the precepts in the middle of a river, hence he was called Madhyāntika. The Xiyu ji says: 'Beside the great monastery in the Daril Valley, there is a carved wooden image of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, over a hundred feet tall in all. The arhat Madhyāntika took the craftsmen and ascended to Tuṣita Heaven to view the marvelous physical form in person; after going and returning three times, the work was finally completed.'
