A native of Ujjayinī in Western India. His brilliant conduct was clear and bright, his vessel and bearing pure and solemn, his spirit vigorous and transcendent, distant and tranquil. Among the various canons and broad collections, there was none he did not retain in mind, and he was thoroughly familiar with the diverse interpretations of arts and skills. In the Taiqing era of Emperor Wu of the Liang, he translated sūtras in the Baoyun Hall. When the disturbances of Hou Jing arose, he moved to Yuzhang, Shixing, Nankang, and other places; though anxious and troubled, his work of translation never ceased. He then boarded a boat to return to the West, but the wind of karma dictated his fate, blowing him back to Guangzhou. Residing at the Zhizhi Monastery, he translated.
