> \[Vairocana\]: The Fuxing says: "Here translated as Pervading All Places (Bian Yiqie Chu). The substance of the afflictions is pure, the myriad virtues are fully provided, body and land match each other, and he pervades all places." The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: "First is the svabhāvakāya, referring to the pure, true dharmadhātu of all Tathāgatas, which is the equal basis of enjoyment and transformation, quiescent and free from marks, cutting off all conceptual proliferation, and possessing boundless true virtues; it is the equal real nature of all phenomena. This very self-nature is also called the dharmakāya." The Xuan of the Golden Light Sūtra says: "Dharma means that which can serve as a model; all Buddhas model themselves on it and attain buddhahood. Therefore the sūtra says: 'That which all Buddhas take as their teacher is what is called the Dharma.'" The Mahāyāna Treatise says: "Examining its dharmakāya, its real substance is profoundly tranquil beyond discursive thoughts; being quiescent, it is named extinction, and is able to serve as the support for physical forms. Now we ask: 'If being quiescent is named extinction, how can it be called the dharmakāya?' Answer: 'The Dharma is in truth without names; to expound and differentiate it for the sake of capacities, we designate the quiescent substance and arbitrarily term it the dharmakāya.' Question: 'Should the tranquil substance be the same as empty space?' Answer: 'All marks whatsoever are non-marks. One recognizes the five musical sounds to be like echoes in a valley, knowing that they have no real sound; one understands the myriad things to be like forms in a dream, seeing that all are non-matter. Emptiness and existence are non-dual, and the Middle Way is luminous; one must not, upon hearing of non-existence, consider emptiness to be total annihilation.'"
