> \[Makkhali Gosāla\] Makkhali is rendered here as "Not Seeing the Path." Kumārajīva says: "Makkhali is the personal name; Gosāla is his mother." Sengzhao says: "This person generated the view asserting that the suffering and pleasure of sentient beings are not obtained through practice, but are all spontaneous." Jingjue states: "Regarding spontaneity, it is also annihilationism. Ziran ('spontaneous'): ran means 'thus'; zi means 'as such.' The Vibhāṣā says: 'Dharmas should be so; they cannot be altered, nor interrogated; this is the meaning of being naturally so.' Spontaneity is identical with being naturally so."
