> \[Markaṭa\] Alternatively makaṭa or markaṭa; this is translated as monkey. The Benxing jing says: 'I recall in the past in the ocean there was a great dragon whose pregnant wife craved eating a monkey's heart. Her husband said: "This is exceedingly difficult; I live in the ocean and the monkey is in the mountains. Please be patient, and I will seek one." Then the dragon went ashore, saw a monkey in a tree, comforted him with pleasant words, and made friends with him, saying: "I shall take you across to the other shore of the ocean. There is another great forest with an abundance of flowers and fruits; you can come down and ride upon my back." The monkey followed the dragon's words and together they went down into the water. The dragon then told him: "My wife is pregnant and craves eating your heart, which is why I brought you along." The monkey then lied, saying: "Why did you not say so beforehand? I just left my heart behind upon a sāla tree and did not bring it along. Good friend, turn back and let me retrieve my heart, and once I have gotten it I shall return with you." The dragon then returned to shore, and the monkey leapt with all his might into a large tree. The dragon waited for a long time and told him to come down quickly. The monkey spoke in verse, saying: / "Though your plans, dragon, may be generous, / The wisdom of your mind is petty and crude. / If you only ponder it carefully yourself: / Among all classes of living beings, who lacks a heart?"' The Liudu jing has a turtle in place of a dragon.
