> 【Udraka Rāmaputra】 Also called Yùtóu Lánfú; here translated as “Fierce Joy”, and also “Utmost Joy”. The Madhyamāgama’s Rāma Sūtra states: “When I was a young man of twenty-nine, I went to Ārāḍa Kālāma and asked, saying: ‘May I practice the holy life according to your teaching, or not?’ He answered, saying: ‘There is no reason you cannot.’ ‘How does one know and realize this Dharma for oneself?’ The ṛṣi said: ‘Transcending the sphere of consciousness, I attain the sphere of nothingness.’ Thereupon I dwelled in a secluded place, cultivated and realized it, and went again to the ṛṣi, declaring what I had attained. The ṛṣi asked: ‘Have you already realized the sphere of nothingness? What I have attained, have you attained it as well?’ and together we led the assembly. Then I thought to myself: ‘This teaching does not lead to wisdom, nor does it lead to nirvāṇa; should I not seek an even more secure place?’ Therefore, I went further to Udraka Rāmaputra, saying: ‘I wish to study in your teaching.’ He answered: ‘There is no reason you cannot.’ I asked: ‘Do you know and realize it yourself?’ He answered: ‘Transcending the sphere of nothingness, I attained the samādhi of neither-perception-nor-non-perception. I realized it long ago.’ I then cultivated and attained it, and even led the assembly with him, and so forth. Again I thought: ‘This teaching does not lead to nirvāṇa.’ Then I went to Mount Gayāśīrṣa, to the village of the brāhmaṇa Senāpatī, beside the Nairañjanā River, and vowed not to rise from my seat. Thereupon I attained supreme, secure nirvāṇa.”
