> \[Argha\] Translated here as water. The Shiming says: 'Water (shui) is a standard (zhun); it levels and balances things.' The Sūtra in Praise of the Pure Land and the Buddha's Protection explains the waters of eight merits: first, limpid and clear; second, cool and pure; third, sweet and delicious; fourth, light and soft; fifth, moistening and glossy; sixth, peaceful and harmonious; seventh, drinking it dispels hunger, thirst, and all other troubles; eighth, having drunk it, it unfailingly nourishes the sense faculties and the four great elements. Jingjue says: Clarity is the sense realm of visible form; absence of foul odor is the sense realm of smell; lightness, coolness, and softness are the sense realm of touch; sweetness is the sense realm of taste; and suitability is the sense realm of mental phenomena.
