> \[Ajitavatī River\] The Record of the Western Regions says: 'In the Tang language it means Unconquered. Formerly called the Aliluobati River, which is an error.' Canonical language calls it the Hiraṇyavatī River, translated as the River Containing Gold, which is where jambūnada gold is produced. Dharma Master Liangzong says: 'The Buddha came to the bank of this river to enter nirvāṇa with an intentional purpose: the river surges swiftly, just as birth and death are rapid and fleeting. The golden sands remain unmoving, illustrating that the Buddha-nature is eternal. Furthermore, having in past causal stages cast away his body here, he now came here to enter parinirvāṇa.' Zhang'an says: 'Tradition claims that the Nairañjanā is the \[Ajita\]vatī. Now we say it is not so: the \[Ajita\]vatī is large, while the Nairañjanā is small. Some say it is four zhang wide, others say eight zhang; it is located north of the city, whereas the size of the \[Ajita\]vatī is south of the city, a hundred li apart, and the Buddha dwelled between them. Nairañjanā translates here as the River of Non-Attachment.' In the Sūtra on Crossing the Realm of All Buddhas, the Buddha speaks of the four torrents: the torrent of sensual desire, the torrent of existence, the torrent of views, and the torrent of ignorance. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra speaks of the six rivers: the river of birth and death, the river of nirvāṇa, the river of afflictions, the river of Buddha-nature, the river of good dharmas, and the river of bad dharmas.
