> \[Bodhivṛkṣa (Bodhi tree)\] The \*Record of the Western Regions\* says: "It is the pippala tree. Formerly, when the Buddha was in the world, it was several hundred feet tall; although repeatedly subjected to being chopped down, it is still forty to fifty feet tall. The Buddha sat beneath it and accomplished equal, correct awakening; consequently, it was called the Bodhi tree. Its trunk is yellowish-white, and its branches and leaves are lush green; it does not wither in winter or summer, remaining lustrous and fresh without change. Whenever the day of nirvāṇa arrives, its leaves all wither and fall, and after a short while return to their previous state." The \*Forest of Dharma Origins\* says: "The tree of awakening of Śākya is named \*apadra\* \[aśvattha\]."
