> \[Tāla\]: Formerly called \*pattra\*; translated here as 'shore'. In shape it resembles the palm tree of this land, straight and tall, reaching at its highest eighty to ninety feet. Its flowers resemble yellow millet grains. Someone says: A single \*tāla\* tree is seven \*rèn\* high—seven feet being a \*rèn\*—thus the tree is forty-nine feet tall. The \*Records of the Western Regions\* says: 'Not far north of the kingdom of Konkanapura in South India, there is a \*tāla\* forest extending over thirty leagues. Its leaves are long and broad, lustrous in color; all kingdoms collect and employ them for writing.'
