> \[Śītavana\]: Properly called \*śītavana\*; translated here as 'Cold Forest'. The forest is deep, secluded, and cold. The \*Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya\* says: 'This forest contains many corpses; people who enter it feel cold and terrified.' The \*Account of Faxian\* names it \*śmaśāna\*, which in the language of the Han means 'cemetery where the dead are cast away'. The \*Dharmaguptaka Vinaya\* names it 'Forest of Terror'. The \*Vibhāṣā\* names it 'Andhavana' \[Blind Forest\], and also 'Daytime-Dark Forest'.
