> \[Dantakāṣṭha\]: \*Danta\* is translated here as tooth; \*kāṣṭha\* is translated here as wood; meaning a tooth-wood. The long ones are twelve finger-breadths; the short ones are six finger-breadths. Mostly khadira wood is used. Because this land lacks it, willow branches are mostly used. The \*Account of the Sea Voyage\* says: 'As thick as a little finger, chew one end gently and brush the teeth clean. When finished, split it open, bend it, and scrape the tongue.' The \*Mahīśāsaka Vinaya\* states: 'After chewing, it should be washed clean and discarded, lest insects eat it and die.'
