> \[Arī\]: Some say: Because this land lacks it, it is not translated. The tree resembles an orchid; when its branches fall, they must split into seven parts. Yijing's translation of the \*Mayūrī Sūtra\* reads: 'Head split into seven parts, like an arjaka flower cluster.' He further explains himself: 'In Sanskrit it is called \*arjaka-mañjarī\*. \*Arjaka\* is holy basil; \*mañjarī\* is the head of the flower cluster. Old versions called it the branch of the \*arī\* tree. Being neither adept in the original sounds nor acquainted with the matter, this gave rise to long-standing confusion. However, upon inquiring in the West, there is originally no \*arī\* tree.'
