> \[Gold, silver, and coins/likenesses (jīnyín shēngxiàng)\] The ninth of the ten precepts for novice monks (śrāmaṇeras): not handling gold, silver, or things resembling them (rūpa/jātarūpa-rajata). Nanshan says: 'Both foreign and Chinese terms are displayed, meaning the foreign expression is shēngxiàng. This translates to gold and silver.' The Samantapāsādikā states: 'Raw color (jātarūpa) and similar color (rūpa). Similar means likeness; that is, gold naturally has a yellow color, while silver can be dyed to resemble gold, hence called "produced likeness".' The Zhigui states: 'Moreover, the Khotanese language is different from the languages of the five Indias. If the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya reached Khotan, it underwent one round of translation; when the text reached the Tang, it was translated again.'
