> \[Sumeru\] The Record of the Western Regions says: 'In the language of Tang it is called Wonderfully High (Miaogao). Formerly it was called Xumi or Xumilou, which are both errors. Compounded of the four jewels, it sits amidst the great ocean, resting upon the golden wheel, where the sun and moon circle and pause, and where the gods wander and dwell. Seven mountains and seven seas encircle it in surrounding ranges and arrays. Each of its four faces has a single color: gold on the east, lapis lazuli on the south, silver on the west, and crystal on the north. Following each respective direction, the water shares the color of the mountain.' The Abhidharma and the Kośa say: 'Wonderfully High: formed of the seven jewels, it is therefore called wonderful; rising above the seven golden mountains, it is therefore called high.' The Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra says: 'Its elevation is 3,360,000 li, and its breadth and length are likewise so.'
