> \[Gāthā\] This translates as "isolated verses." The Miaoxuan says: "Those that do not repeat in verse \[what preceded\] are called isolated verses. They are also called chant verses." The Record of the Western Regions says: "In ancient times it was called jie, which was an abbreviation of the Sanskrit text. Some called it jieta, which was a corruption of the Sanskrit sound. Now, following the correct pronunciation, it should be called gāthā, which in the language of the Tang is 'verse' (song)."
