> In the thirty-eighth year after the Bhagavat attained enlightenment, he finished eating at the invitation of the king in the city of Rājagṛha. He ordered Rāhula to wash the bowl; \[Rāhula's\] hand slipped and the bowl struck the ground, breaking into five pieces. On that day, many bhikṣus reported to the Buddha: "The bowl broke into five pieces." The Buddha said: "This portends that in the first five hundred years after my nirvāṇa, wicked bhikṣus will divide the Vinayapiṭaka into five schools." Therefore, the five masters—Kāśyapa, Ānanda, Madhyāntika, Śāṇavāsa, and Upagupta—understood the provisional and realized the Path, and so did not divide the teaching. Upagupta had five disciples, each holding to one view, who then divided the Tathāgata's one great Vinayapiṭaka into five schools.
