> Second, the metaphor of the phantom: the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says: "Like a skillful illusionist who, relying on grass, wood, tiles, and stones, produces various phantoms, causing various shapes and colors of all sentient beings to arise, and producing various delusive thoughts." Shiqian says: "The names 'mirage' and 'phantom' apply to both the biased and the perfect teachings. Now speaking from the perfect \[teaching\], the One Mind has three phantoms." The Jingming ji says: "All are like illusory transformations; the conventional is identical, but the ultimate is different: one conventional and three ultimates." The Zhiyao establishes three kinds of phantoms: the phantom of nature displacing cultivation; the phantom of mere principle according with conditions; and the phantom of arising from conditions without self-substance. Therefore the Zhiyao says: "Nature is originally completely endowed; all manifestations arise from perfuming. Because nature displaces cultivation, cultivation is like a phantom." It also says: "Yet this is not yet the phantom of mere principle according with conditions; how could it be the same as the phantom of arising from conditions without self-substance? Thus we know that while the name 'like a phantom' is the same, the meanings of 'phantom' are each different."
