> 【Na】In Qin, 'not'. The Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra states: "The letter-gate na: because all dharmas are free from name, nature, and characteristics, and cannot be attained or lost." The Treatise states: "One immediately knows that all dharmas cannot be attained or lost, and neither come nor go." In the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, chanting the letter-gate na is named 'attaining the gate of non-reliance', and named 'attaining unexcelled non-reliance'. The Commentary states: "'Na' means that all dharmas have neither nature nor characteristics; in speech and writing, both nature and characteristics vanish, hence there is 'non-reliance'. The signifier and the signified are obliterated; this is termed 'unexcelled'."
