> \[Udāna\] Tiantai's Chanmen states: "Here it is translated as the cinnabar field (dantian), two and a half inches below the navel." The Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra says: "When a person speaks, wind exits from the mouth; it is called udāna. After this wind exits, it returns inward down to the navel. The verse says: 'The wind named udāna / touches the navel and ascends. / This wind touches seven places: / the crown of the head, gums, teeth, and lips, / tongue, throat, and the chest; / it is from among these that speech arises.'" The treatise says: "Inhalation and exhalation are physical conditioning factors; sensation and conceptualization are mental conditioning factors; coarse examination and subtle investigation are verbal conditioning factors." The Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra says: "There is a wind that can ascend, and there is a wind that can descend. If the mind thinks of ascending, the wind follows the mind and is drawn upward; if the mind thinks of descending, the wind follows the mind and is drawn downward. Movement and action are entirely the wind moving in accord with the mind. In doing any action, if the path of wind is obstructed, the hands and feet cannot comply; although the mind has the intention, movement has nowhere to come from. For example, just as when a person pulls the strings of a puppet, various shadow-puppet actions are performed; if the puppet-string breaks, the hand has nothing to pull—know that it is all performed relying on wind."
