> \[Bhojanīya\] The Four-Part Vinaya says: "There are five kinds of bhojanīya. In Chinese, this means 'proper food,' referring to parched flour, boiled rice, dried rice, fish, and meat." The Saṅghika-vinaya says: "Food of the proper time means food that may be eaten at the proper time and may not be eaten at improper times." The Duolun says: "From dawn to midday, the light becomes increasingly bright; this is called the proper time. After midday the light fades; this is called the improper time. When we now speak of the midday meal, it may be eaten at noon when the sun is in the center of heaven." The Saṅghika says: "When the shadow at noon exceeds a single hair or the blink of an eye, it is immediately the improper time." When Emperor Wen of the Song offered food to the saṅgha, he sat with the assembly on floor mats. The distribution of food was delayed, and the assembly suspected it was becoming late and would not eat. The Emperor said: "It is only just midday!" Master Daosheng said: "The bright sun adorns the sky; the Son of Heaven says it is just midday—how could it not be midday?" He then took his bowl and ate. The assembly followed him, and the Emperor was greatly pleased.
