Next after the thirty-seven items are the four noble truths; after the Lesser Twelve Gates are the three directions, thus making forty items of nirvāṇa. Calm, contemplation, and the four noble truths are practices for accomplishing the Path that cannot dispense with one another. Therefore, I compiled calm, contemplation, the three samādhis, the four dhyānas, and the four noble truths, appending them after the thirty-seven items, desiring that practitioners may examine them with ease and put them into practice.
