> The later record in the middle of the scroll on the ritual for nuns receiving the full ordination states: In this land there was no text for the full precepts of the bhikṣuṇīs; for this singular Saṅgha procedure had long been absent. Although in the land of Wu there were bhikṣuṇīs of the five hundred precepts, those precepts were produced by Mianli, and upon examination they bore no resemblance to the rules instituted by the sage. Dao-lin \[Zhi Daolin\] sounded the drum and corrected them; he may truly be called a pillar supporting the Dharma. Last year, Fa-tai also had a foreigner produce a small portion, but it was still insufficient. Huichang obtained one scroll of the five hundred precepts in Liangzhou, but it was merely a duplication of precepts upon precepts, resembling the work of a human hand; its meanings were shallow and rudimentary. Later, Sengchun and Tancong came from Kuqa, and from the temple of Yunmulan, under the eminent śramaṇa Buddhasama, they obtained these full precepts for bhikṣuṇīs as well as the procedure for conferring ordination, from receiving the seating down to the ritual of Jianmu. Thereupon they had Fotuobei translate it and Dharmapāla transmit it, and only then was it known to be truly instituted by the Tathāgata. Yet the number is not limited to five hundred; the bhikṣu precepts contain two hundred and sixty interrogations. The reason given by Dharmapāla was that no one knew the cause of this. However, deducing it from reason, two hundred and fifty and five hundred are merely stating the round numbers. Furthermore, the text for conferring the full precepts on bhikṣuṇīs is brief; it likely adopts the procedure for conferring ordination on great bhikṣus, only bringing out what is different. The eight pārājikas do not differ; they also ought to rely on what suffices for bhikṣus. It should also briefly confer the section of the seventeen saṅghāvaśeṣas. Furthermore, in conferring the full ordination on bhikṣuṇīs, there are three nun masters and an instructor master, who together with seven \[other\] nuns interrogate regarding the internal matters outside the platform. Interrogating regarding internal matters outside the platform is considered grave in practical procedure. Therefore the foreign masters say: 'When interrogating outside the platform, one should say, "Directly thus, in the midst of the Saṅgha on the platform you will be questioned; you should answer thus." When interrogating on the platform, one then says, "Now in the midst of the Saṅgha you are questioned; it is directly thus."' Tancong was sent back to Kuqa to inquire about the conferring of full ordination on bhikṣuṇīs; once the procedure was settled, a report was required to serve as the model. The text for conferring the six dharmas has no deficiency; there are only two masters, and no instructor master. (On the platform, the more monks and nuns, the better.) The record at the end of the scroll further states: On the fifth day of the eleventh month in the fifteenth year of the Jianyuan reign of the Qin \[379 CE\], the year being in Chunwei, the bhikṣus Sengchun and Tancong obtained from the eminent śramaṇa of Kucha, Buddhasama, this ceremonial for conferring the full precepts on bhikṣuṇīs and the two-year ceremonial for the precepts, from receiving the seating to the miscellaneous matters of entrustment. They had Dharmapāla produce it, Fotuobei translate it, and Huichang serve as scribal recorder. All these matters are of pressing urgency for actual practice. If one acts as a teacher of others without mastering these, one is no different from an earthen ox trailing behind others. The Liangzhou cleric Zhu Daoman, on account of this unusual matter, came from Kucha to give it to the Dunhuang clerics. The temples in which these śramaṇas resided each numbered two hundred or three hundred persons as one Saṅgha. The bhikṣuṇīs numbered nearly three hundred persons, with five temples in all. Each conformed to the temple of the monks they depended on to establish their boundary; they had no joint ritual for reciting the precepts. They regularly recited the precepts at dusk. On the day of reciting the precepts, the bhikṣuṇīs dispatched three persons to go and inform the monks on whom they depended, saying, 'Today the precepts are to be recited.' The monks then dispatched two persons to visit the bhikṣuṇīs; having ascertained the number, they returned and informed the great monks, saying, 'The bhikṣuṇīs number so-and-so many; in such-and-such a temple they are reciting the precepts in purity.' This was announced to all. Having made three such announcements, the bhikṣuṇīs then distributed the tallies among themselves and recited the precepts according to the standard Saṅgha ritual. (Tancong said: 'During the great fast, the Vinaya is recited for sixty days to completion; the nuns are also lodged to listen. If they encounter the recitation of the precepts, they are also lodged to listen to the precepts, only that they are not given the śalākā tallies.')
