> The Bhadrakalpika-sūtra says: After the two thousand one hundred perfections had been explained, Bodhisattva Pramodyarāja then asked, 'Are there any great beings in this assembly who, having attained this samādhi, enter these eight thousand four hundred perfections, as well as the eighty-four thousand perfection dharmas, and enter the eighty-four thousand samādhi gateways?' The Buddha replied, 'There are. Not only these great beings, but also the one thousand Tathāgatas of the future Bhadrakalpa will likewise be able to enter, with the exception of the four Perfectly Awakened Ones.' Pramodyarāja said to the Buddha, 'I pray only that the World-Honoured One will explain the names, clans, and titles of all these Buddhas.' The Buddha explained for Pramodyarāja the titles and names of all the Buddhas. The names and titles were one thousand in number, with some surplus; yet when repeated in the two chapters 'Arising' and 'Arousing the Mind', they all stopped parallel to 'Huiye'. Examining them against these two chapters, there are those with two characters for a name, those with three characters for a name, and those that use other characters to complete the phonetic phrase, which are not their names or titles; there are also times when the characters vary, though in the Sanskrit original they are seen to be identical. This was likely because the translators altered their sounds and phrasings, making them vary. Those that are long and have extra characters should perhaps have four, five, or six characters as their names and titles. The chapters 'Arising' and 'Arousing the Mind' do not exhaust the names; from Huiye downward it is difficult to determine in detail. I now separate those that can be understood, making each a Buddha-name; where the meaning cannot be understood, I present them in full. Furthermore, where characters differ, I note them below. However, this may at times misplace the divisions and combinations; if discerning and accomplished persons should perceive this upon reflection, they may correct and settle it, pardoning my shortcomings.
