> The śramaṇa Dharmaratna was a native of Central India. In his youth he was quick-witted, elegant, and universally loving. He was well-versed in meditative contemplation, and in the vinaya there was nothing whose subtlety he had not plumbed. He had recited by heart over a million words of scriptures, and his disciples numbered over a thousand. In his dwelling he did not seek comfort, but was constantly mindful of broadly benefiting \[others\]. His disciplinary rules were strict and exacting, so that the assembly could not find fault. When he encountered Yin's invitation, he immediately had the resolve to set out light-heartedly, but the king of his country would not permit it. He secretly came together with Mātanga, travelling by back roads, and arrived later. During the reign of Emperor Ming of the Han, he initially translated the Sūtra of Forty-two Chapters together with Mātanga; after Mātanga passed away, from the eleventh year of the Yongping reign era, the year being wuchen, to the thirteenth year, gengwu, Ratna translated by himself: the Sūtra of the Buddha's Past Acts (in five fascicles), the Sūtra of Severing Fetters on the Ten Stages (in four fascicles), the Sūtra of the Ocean Treasury of the Dharma (in three fascicles), the Jātaka Sūtra of the Buddha (in two fascicles), and the Concordance of the Two Hundred and Sixty Precepts (in two fascicles)—in total, five works in sixteen fascicles. Earlier, when Emperor Wu dug the Kunming Pool, he found black ash. He asked Dongfang Shuo about it, and Shuo said: "You may ask the barbarians of the Western Regions." Once Dharmaratna arrived, he was subsequently questioned about it, and Ratna said: "This is the ash from the kalpa fire." Furthermore, he brought to Luoyang a model of King Udayana's sandalwood statue, and the Emperor immediately ordered that it be painted and copied for worship.
