He left household life in his youth. His aspirations and conduct were pure and lofty, gentle without and bright within. Clear-sighted and sharp, he synthesized the study of numerous scriptures and was especially skilled in Chinese lexicography. For generations his family lived in Xihe, so he thoroughly comprehended regional languages, and there was nothing he did not master in both Sanskrit and Chinese pronunciations and meanings. In the Jianyuan reign of Fu Qin, he entered Chang'an together with Saṅghabhadra and others, interpreting the language for Bhadra and the rest. Across both the Fu and Yao dynasties, he stood as the ancestral master of translators.
