The above scriptures total 34 fascicles. Formerly there was a young nun who, without studying under a master, suddenly recited them from memory. Her name was Sengfa, and she was the daughter of Jiang Mi, an Erudite of the National University under the Southern Qi. In the Sui dynasty, Fei Changfang took them to be the result of past habituation, and for this reason placed them in the orthodox catalogue. However, catalogues such as Renshou and Xianheng all classified them in the apocrypha section, maintaining that they were not spoken by the Buddha. The present compilation follows the Renshou [catalogue] and others.

The above scriptures have traditionally been called apocryphal and erroneous. Examining their texts, they are prolix and disorganized, and their principles and doctrines are shallow and frivolous. Although they usurp the title of having been spoken by the Buddha, in the end they betray the marks of human schemes. That the multitudes are confused and fall [into error] is entirely due to these. Therefore they have been fully detailed and listed above.

The above miscellaneous treatises of the Three Levels Sect consist of 22 works in 29 fascicles.
In accordance with the gracious imperial decree of the 1st year of the Zhengsheng era, ordering that apocryphal scriptures, miscellaneous talismans, registers, and the like be determined and dispatched to the Ministry of Rites for submission to the imperial palace: since the teachings mentioned above go against the Buddha's intention and establish separate, aberrant tenets, they fall within the category of apocryphal and miscellaneous talismans and registers. Furthermore, according to an imperial decree of the 2nd year of the Shengli era: "Those who study the Three Levels may only engage in begging for food, keeping a continuous fast, abstaining from grains, observing the precepts, and sitting in meditation; any arbitrary practices beyond this are violations of the law." Fortunately receiving these clear decrees so that past wrongs may be reformed, we dare not rashly enter them into the catalogue; all have been excised and deleted so as to instruct the future.
