> Sūtra: "If a person says \[…\] \[the Tathāgata attained anuttarā samyak\]saṃbodhi."
> Exposition: Third: the Buddha does not attain bodhi. The treatise says: "Someone might say that under Dīpaṃkara Tathāgata, he did not attain correct awakening regarding the Dharma, but the World-Honoured One later attained correct awakening by himself. To abandon this attachment, the sūtra says and so on." Someone might think: because the Dharma cannot be spoken, at the time of Dīpaṃkara Buddha he did not realize bodhi but only received a distant prophecy; when he later became a Buddha, since he realized bodhi, should there be a real dharma by which he attained correct awakening? Therefore, to shatter this doubt, even in attaining bodhi later, there is also no dharma. That treatise's verse says: "Bodhi is equal to that practice." What does this mean? If someone says that that bodhisattva practice truly exists, this is false; likewise, if someone says the Tathāgata attained anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi, this is also false. Hence it is said: "Bodhi is equal to that practice." Exposition: Previously it was said that there is no real bodhisattva capable of practicing; now bodhi is also like this, because there is no real dharma. Thus it is said that bodhi is exactly equal to that practice. In this treatise, because of the objection: "The cause was not supreme and did not attain bodhi; does the fruit stage, being distinctive and supreme, attain bodhi?" this text is therefore present. Furthermore, because immediately before it was said that tathatā is not utterly non-existent, \[one might ask\]: if so, did the Buddha attain anything? Hence this text arises.
