Distinguishing defilement and purity is called "wisdom"; being able to illuminate true reality is called the "eye." The sages of the three vehicles take the wisdom that understands reality in accordance with their realization of the twofold emptiness to be the wisdom eye. The preceding divine eye has not yet abandoned delusion. Bodhisattvas next cultivate the wisdom eye because they wish to know the true nature of all phenomena, accomplish truth to leave behind the path of birth-and-death, and wish to rescue sentient beings in their present life so that they are free from delusion. When it reaches the Buddha's body, the one is the all; because a single wisdom sees and penetrates both principle and phenomena, in terms of illuminating principle it is also called the "wisdom eye."
