> Sūtra: “Subhūti \[…\] is it that nothing was attained?”
>
> Praise: Next below, second, explaining the mind of correct awakening reveals the nineteenth doubt, \[namely\] the doubt about attaining the realization of the fruit. Cultivating the superior causes, fruit, and practices of bodhi, previously the station of mindfulness with great compassion at the head was explained; the wisdom of great compassion must be completed by the fruit. When the fruit is fully completed, it accords with the accomplishment of correct awakening. Wishing to accomplish correct awakening, one is caused to cultivate unexcelled, wondrous practices, both conditioned and unconditioned. Yet all bodhisattvas are not free from self and dharmas; unable to possess these two practices like the Buddha, they conversely doubt that the Buddha's practices are the unexcelled practice, forming this doubt: “Why would the Tathāgata be free from having nothing attained and nothing practiced? This highest realization relies on successive practices, having practices with attainment \[…\] realization of bodhi; why now do you cause me to practice these two practices?” Due to grasping, although they practice, they run contrary to correct awakening; due to doubt, they moreover do not wish to cultivate. Now, wishing to reveal their minds of doubt and grasping, \[the Buddha\] therefore speaks of the true principle: although there is not a single dharma that can be cultivated, if one is apart from the conventional truth and the expedients of practice, there is no way to realize it. Asaṅga, in terms of removing grasping and causing one to learn, terms this the “mind of correct awakening”; Vasubandhu, with respect to revealing the doubt and causing one to cultivate, terms this “revealing the doubt about attaining the realization of the fruit.” In the text below, there are two parts: first, Subhūti raises the question, and afterward, the Tathāgata immediately answers. This is the first: throughout three asaṃkhyeya kalpas doubly cultivating the two truths, as for the accomplished correct awakening, whether cause or fruit, is it not indeed that nothing was attained?
