> Sūtra: "Subhūti," up to "dismembered my limbs." Commentary: Below, the explanation has two parts: first clarifying the loci where forbearance arises, and later directly clarifying the marks of forbearance. This is the first. Now, there are three kinds of loci where forbearance arises: namely, arousing the forbearance of hostility and harm toward others, arousing the forbearance of accepting toward cold, heat, and so forth, and arousing the forbearance of examining toward phenomena, self, and so forth. Here, the loci where the three forbearances arise should be clarified, and under the marks of forbearance below, the three forbearances should be clarified. Yet as to what can arise and what gives rise to it, only enduring hostility is mentioned; because the text is abbreviated, it adduces the first to reveal the rest. It reveals that in the past, when he was the Forbearance-Seer and his limbs were dismembered by the Contentious King, he was able to endure this suffering without giving rise to an angry mind. Therefore, the place where one encounters hostility and harm from others is simply the locus where the forbearance of enduring hostility arises.
