> Commentary: The second \[point is to show equality; the text mistakenly says "third non-equality"\], which has seven reasons: 1. because inwardly he realizes the principle of equality; 2. because outwardly he manifests the equal appearance of rich, poor, noble, and base; 3. because his inner mind is free from greed and pride: not craving the fine and good, nor looking down upon the coarse and base; 4. because his loving-kindness and compassion are universally equal without partiality; 5. to display great majestic power, not fearing rogue elephants, houses of tavern women, and the like; 6. to halt external suspicion and doubt: if there were selection, non-Buddhists and evil people would say the Buddha and the Saṃgha have intimacy and distance, and would produce suspicion and slander; 7. to refute the two vehicles, namely subduing the biases of Kāśyapa and Subhūti toward the poor or the rich.
