> Sūtra: ...and washed his feet.
> Commentary: The second is purifying bodily karma. The Account of the Immortals says: "It is the constant rule of the Buddhas to observe the practice of walking on foot. Yet when the Tathāgata walks, he is four fingers above the ground and lotuses spring up beneath; how could there be dust or dirt? Saying 'washed his feet' shows householders an appearance of strict and pure deportment worthy of reverence." First, it accords with worldly convention, signifying the emergence from defilement to attain purity and revealing the Dharma-body. Second, it signifies the purity of the feet of morality, leading to the generation of samādhi. Third, it is out of reverence for concentration. Fourth, it is out of reverence for the Dharma, being about to preach the Dharma, which is the teacher of all Buddhas. Fifth, it causes people to increase reverence toward him and generate merit. Sixth, it abides by normative rules. In the Vinaya, one washes feet first and eats afterward; here washing the feet again after eating is due to the aforementioned reasons.
