> Sūtra: At that time, the Elder Subhūti, up to, addressed the Buddha, saying...
> Exposition: From here down is the second \[major division\]: the section spoken as the holy teaching, which is the main thesis. Asaṅga Bodhisattva divided and explained the purport of the sūtra using seven topics: 1. perpetuation of the lineage; 2. arousal of practice; 3. abode of practice; 4. counteragent; 5. non-loss; 6. ground; 7. designation. The first six topics demonstrate the culmination of what bodhisattvas do; the seventh topic demonstrates the establishment of this Dharma-gate. Exposition: The first six directly clarify the main thesis; the latter one explains the name of the sūtra. Regarding the first six, the first three are individually matched to the sūtra text; the subsequent \[three\], the abodes, are general meanings. "Meaning" (artha) is what is expressed; "sentence" (pada) is what expresses; combined, they are called "topics" (arthapada). Why does it not speak of "syllable" (akṣara) or "name" (nāma), but instead of "sentence" (pada)? Syllables are not expressive \[of full meaning\]; names are restricted to intrinsic nature. Now, because a sentence is broad, manifesting the fullness of meaning and expressing distinctions, it speaks only of "sentences". If so, why does it not say "the meanings of seven sentences"? Answer: If one said "corresponds to meaning," one might fear there are seven sentences; now it manifests seven meanings, while the sentences are sentences of immeasurable meanings; hence it is explained according to the words. Yet, because the opening verses of both treatises speak of "sentence-meanings," this generally and broadly discusses the teaching expressing meaning, not manifesting the seven meanings; thus there is no flaw. Some say "the meaning of seven sentences"—this is erroneous. As for the latter three, the counteragent is the aspect of abandonment, retribution; non-loss is the middle way that is cultivated; grounds are the distinct stages of these two dharmas. Broadly, they are named "abodes." Because they are the bases relied upon by those who generate the Great Vehicle, they are distinctly named "grounds." Those stages, tainted and untainted \[…\] compliantly generating superior dharmas, able to sustain and able to increase \[…\] the basis relied upon by all dharmas is named "abode." This is the distinction between the two. The sūtra text has three parts: first, from this passage onward is perpetuation of the lineage; second, from "Bhagavat, if good sons..." downward is arousal of practice; third, from "The Buddha told..." downward is the abode of practice. First, it clarifies praising the Buddha to request the preaching; next, it asks about cultivation as the root for heading toward the Great; afterward, the Buddha extensively preaches to discern the essential principle of cultivation and subduing. Now, perpetuation of the lineage is of itself the culmination of the main thesis of the entire scripture; therefore \[…\] Buddha-lineage is broken in parts, so circulation \[…\] this phrase also appears in the six causes below. Now, because the beginning of the sūtra \[…\] really pervades. Because of this, Subhūti especially praised this virtue.
