> From the line "The wisdom of all Buddhas" onward is one and a half verses, the fourth \[topic\]: relying on contrast to manifest subtlety. Because the cognition of this ground is the realm of all Buddhas, it is called the "wisdom of the Buddhas." "Transcends all mental factors" means that this cognition is not like the sphere of wisdom born of reflection. "Transcends the path of mind" means that it is not like the perceptual cognition born of retribution. Those two can be spoken of; this cognition is not their sphere, and therefore it is called "inexpressible." As for "cannot be conceived," because it is not known by the ear-consciousness and not deliberated upon by the mental consciousness, this shows that it cannot be heard. As for "it is not that there are aggregates, realms, and entrances (skandha-dhātu-āyatana)," like the skandhas, dhātus, and āyatanas, which have distinctions such as physical form, mind, faculties, spheres, and consciousnesses—these can be spoken of. The realized cognition is not like that; because it is the non-conceptual equality devoid of subject and object, it transcends letters and cannot be spoken of. Therefore, it can only be inwardly accessed through realized cognition and cannot be conceptualized. It cannot be fully known by defiled consciousness. Grasping characteristics is called "consciousness," while not grasping characteristics is called "cognition"; hence it is not the sphere of that \[consciousness\]. The treatise says: "'Cognition' is the cognition of the ground, which is the mūlajñāna. 'Arising' is by what contemplation? By the prayoga-contemplative cognition arising the mūlajñāna. By what concomitant practices? Because other practices such as giving also assist its arising."
