> Why this chapter arises: Vimalakīrti manifested traces as affliction flowed, enabling distinctive awakening to ignorance and attachment, and his virtue could draw inquiries; hence it is titled as a chapter. Because the time had arrived when the roots of sentient beings resonated, \[the Buddha\] commanded Mañjuśrī to inquire after the illness. The two masters conversed, setting forth the nourishment of transformation in more than one way; therefore the Tathāgata commanded Mañjuśrī to inquire after the illness. First it clarifies the signs of coming and going; next it analyzes the reason for the illness; finally it explains the three wisdoms transforming illness without fixed methods. From the beginning up to "let us put this matter aside" is the initial explanation of the three sections. It is also a comprehensive praise of Vimalakīrti's lofty virtue, clearing away ordinary minds that reckon the signs of coming and going.
