> Therefore, if in the stage of fruition oneself \[…\] subdues, thus subjugating māras. Now, in terms of benefiting others (parārtha), \[…\] māras are subdued by the bodhisattvas themselves. Mostly using abhijñās below to restrain tīrthikas. Those who falsely conceptualize outside the Dharma are called tīrthikas. These also hinder one's own practice and external conversion; both must be restrained and subdued. However, depending on the particular practice, the methods used are different. In the causal stage of one's own practice, they are subdued by right view (samyagdṛṣṭi). Because right view accords with the truth and does not follow error, in the fruition stage of one's own practice, tīrthikas are subdued by fearlessness (vaiśāradya). The heretics' false knowledge challenges the Buddha, saying he has no virtue. The Tathāgata possesses virtue, so he has no cowardice before them and can subdue them; thus it is with one's own practice. In transforming others, the four pratisamvids are used exclusively to subdue them. Because with the four anāvaraṇa-pratisamvids one broadly knows phenomena and their meanings and can debate and refute them, now, in terms of transforming others, using the four pratisamvids to destroy heresy is called 'restraining tīrthikas'. The above pertains to benefiting others (parārtha).
