> Next below is the second, explaining the cultivation of compassion. Question: Among the myriad practices, why are only the two practices of wisdom and compassion cultivated? Answer: The two practices of wisdom and compassion encompass all practices completely; therefore they are singled out for explanation. Speaking of cultivating wisdom, it is subduing oneself; speaking of cultivating compassion, it is subduing others. Speaking of cultivating it, not abiding in saṃsāra is distinct from ordinary persons; speaking of cultivating compassion, not abiding in nirvāṇa is distinct from śrāvakas. Speaking of cultivating wisdom, one attains the title of bodhisattva; speaking of cultivating compassion, one attains the designation of mahāsattva. Speaking of cultivating wisdom, it relies on revulsion toward the nine \[realms\] as the mind that seeks the mind of all-knowledge; speaking of cultivating compassion, it is accomplished by relying on the mind that deeply reflects on sentient beings. Speaking of cultivating wisdom, it is accomplished by relying on the precept of restraint and the precept of gathering virtuous dharmas; speaking of cultivating compassion, it is accomplished by relying on the precept of gathering sentient beings. Speaking of cultivating wisdom, it accomplishes the virtue of wisdom together with the virtue of abandonment; speaking of cultivating compassion, it accomplishes the virtue of beneficence. Speaking of cultivating wisdom, one attains the dharmakāya together with the sambhogakāya; speaking of cultivating compassion, one attains the nirmāṇakāya. Therefore, wisdom and compassion completely encompass the myriad practices. Regarding this cultivation of compassion, the text likewise has two divisions.
