> 'Parks, groves, and towers' means entering the noble stages because of beholding towers. Regarding 'thirty-two marks', one may see one mark, two marks, or even many marks; they are manifested according to what ought to be shown, all serving as conditions for entering the Way. 'With the Buddha's body' means manifesting the golden body; there are sentient beings who, seeing the Buddha's physical body, arouse the aspiration and awaken to the Way. These three lines above mean that the eye-consciousness can connect to the Way using the sense-object of form as the Buddha's work. 'Space as the Buddha's work' means removing visible shapes and manifesting the appearance of space to make their minds tranquil, whereupon defilements and entanglements naturally dissolve; it is also like Mañjuśrī dissolving all material images and manifesting the appearance of space to transform King Ajātaśatru, who awakened to the Way on this account—this is the mental consciousness connecting to the Way using the sense-object of mental phenomena as the Buddha's work. Below, explaining 'sentient beings who should enter the conduct of discipline through these conditions' means that although the causal practices differ, they all enter the conduct of discipline. 'Further, through dreams and illusions' means understanding the Dharma through similes and attaining awakening to the Way. 'Through sounds and words' means attaining the Way through current spoken teachings. These two lines above mean that the ear-consciousness can connect to the Way using the sense-object of sound as the Buddha's work. 'Silence and wordlessness' is of the same kind as Vimalakīrti's closing of his mouth—this is the mental consciousness being able to connect to the Way using the sense-object of mental phenomena as the Buddha's work. 'In this way, Ānanda, the deportment of all buddhas'—this line generally reveals that the dharmakāya has no marks, responding to awakening in accord with faculties, leaving nothing without benefit. 'Deportment' refers to the four bodily deportments of walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. 'Moving and resting': action and looking up or down are called 'moving'; standing and lying down are called 'resting'. 'All that they perform' refers to the actions produced by the three karmas of seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing. It has never been without benefit; hence it is said that 'there is nothing that is not the Buddha's work.' This means that the six consciousnesses can connect to the Way using the six sense-objects as the Buddha's work. The preceding fourteen lines are Buddha's work in accord with practice.
