> "And the karma of good and evil does not perish." This line explains \[the former\]. Sengzhao says: "If there were neither maker nor receiver, there should not be the occurrence of doing good and obtaining fortune, or doing evil and incurring calamity. Yet, as the mind-consciousness of sentient beings transmits good and evil from one to another, the path of retribution arises thereby, continuing in unbroken succession like a harmonic sound followed by its echo, or an upright form followed by a straight shadow. This is the natural principle, without an error of a hair's breadth. Why then rely on an eternal self to act as its master?"
